Brothers and Sisters in Law Incorporated (BASIL) was formerly known as “The Buddy System”, which commenced as an informal group of some 60 small legal practices throughout NSW. It was originally conceived in the late 1990s by Law Cover, with the objective of providing collegiate support for small legal practices.
While larger firms generally have many specialist solicitors who are available to discuss the more complex legal problems, the small practitioner does not have that luxury. The competitive pressure of modern legal practice is such that rather than turn away a potential client and the fees that may be generated there from, a practitioner can be tempted into unfamiliar areas of practice, with unfortunate consequences. Ie. Professional indemnity claims.
As a result, BASIL has been actively supported by Law Cover who viewed it as an effective risk management tool in that it significantly reduced the two single risk factors at the root cause of professional indemnity claims against small or sole legal practices. I.e. isolation and competition.
The Buddy System was revived, renamed and incorporated as Brothers and Sisters in Law Incorporated in 2007. It is a not-for-profit organization led by a Committee who see considerable benefit in the original concept of low cost CLE points and in particular, the forum for discussion with peers without fear of competition.
